What are the benefits of the ECIS International Teacher Certificate (ITC)?

The ITC will significantly enhance international teachers' skills, knowledge and understanding in the key aspects of their role. It sets the standard for excellence in international schools teaching, enabling teachers to enrich their practice and continuing professional development, and schools to engage and encourage high quality teaching staff. As a program and as a qualification, the ECIS International Teacher Certificate (ITC), jointly offered by the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), has been designed to meet these professional development needs.

The ITC will also have significant benefits for career development, with international teacher recruiters increasingly looking for the ITC as a proof of professional excellence.

Who is it for?

The ITC is for experienced, exemplary teachers in internationally minded schools. They will be keen to build on their accomplishments, and have a commitment to learner and learning-centred international education. Successful applicants to join the program need to be or become an individual ECIS member before registering for the ITC .

What are its features?

The ITC is based on these five ECIS Standards:

• Education in an international context
• Teaching competencies for the international educator
• Teaching students for whom English is an additional language
• Student transition and mobility in international schools
• Reflective practice – continuing professional development

This professional development program provides a balance of online and face-to-face courses, individual research and peer learning, with support from an ECIS-approved mentor. The ITC is assessed by a substantial portfolio of practice-based evidence. University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) are the external assessors of the ITC.
The ITC certificate is thus evidence of teachers' commitment to learning-centered teaching, to first-class professional practice in an international context and to continuing professional development. It is an exemplary qualification for exemplary teachers.
