International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) Recognises the ITC

ITC has been recognised by the IB as the first non-university pathway to the IB Level 1 Teacher Award. The IB Teacher Award is designed to meet the needs of teachers with little or no IB experience who want to strengthen their practical understanding of curriculum as well as pedagogical and assessment issues related to the implementation of the IB programmes. The ITC is a blended standards-based 14-month online programme with a three day face-to-face institute designed to equip teachers with the global mindset necessary for successful teaching in the 21st Century. Teachers who enrol in the ITC as of summer 2011 and who are working in an authorised IB programme (PYP, MYP or DP) OR in an IB candidate school (subject to IB agreement) will be eligible, upon successful completion of the ITC and in accordance with certain criteria, to apply for the IB Level 1 Teacher Award.

The ITC is one of only 5 programmes in the world that offers teachers the IB Teacher Award Level one for the PYP, MYP or DP programmes. This recognition is the culmination of a two-year consultation and review between ECIS, University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) who are the independent assessors of the ITC, and the International Baccalaureate Organisation. The formal agreement was signed by Jean Vahey and IB Director General Jeff Beard in early April.

The next ITC cohorts begin on 1 July 2011 when the ITC Cambridge and ITC Atlanta groups begin the Online Orientation Course.   ITC Istanbul follows with a start date of 1 September 2011 .  Teachers who have already applied to start the programme in the summer may re-apply to signal their interest in the IB Level 1 Teacher Award option.

The ITC and the IB Level 1 Teacher Award- information

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has recognised the ITC as a pathway to the IB Level 1 Teacher Awards. The IB Level 1 Award is issued by the IB. Teachers may apply for the IB Level 1 Award upon successful completion of the ITC. ECIS will provide any additional documentation that may be required by the IBO to confirm your engagement with the IB programmes, values and approaches through your work in the ITC. An additional one-off registration fee (GBP 150.00, USD 263.00, CHF 342.00) will also be required when you apply for the IB Level 1 Award.

In order to use the ITC as preparation for the IB Level 1 Award, the following additional criteria must be met:

1. Work in an authorised IB Programme

The school you are working in during your ITC year must have the appropriate authorised IB programme (PYP, MYP, and/or IBDP). It may not be an IB candidate school for that programme at the time you commence the ITC. The IB must be assured that you are working within the proper IB context to enhance your understanding of the IB programme.

2. Choose an IB Programme

The IB Level 1 Award is specific to the IBPYP, IBMYP, or IBDP. Therefore, you must decide which one you will apply for, and all of your ITC work must be done within that section of the school. This means that special subject teachers, for example, who work across the school must do all of the ITC work with their chosen area of the school (primary, middle or diploma level).

3. Use the ITC to engage with the IB Essential Questions

ECIS is publishing an IB-approved guide to help identify those ITC moments when you can engage with the IB Essential Questions.

4. Give ECIS permission to pass your details to the IBO upon beginning the ITC. This is so the IBO can ensure that you have access to the IB Online Curriculum Centre. They will issue you with a username and password.

5. Identify a mentor who is experienced with the IB programme you have selected. This must be one of the following (in order of our preference!)

(a) your IB Coordinator

(b) an authorised IB Workshop Leader

(c) an authorised IB School Visitor/ authorised IB Consultant

(d) an authorised IB Reader

(d) your principal in an authorised IB Programme

6. Your ITC Standard 2 main activity (planning a 10 hour unit of study related to a global issue) must be aligned to your IB programme teaching/subject area. This Standard will be assessed by a CIE Examiner with IB experience.

7. You should make use of the IB OCC and other IB resources in addition to all of the resources offered through the ITC.

Note: The IB Level 1 Teacher Award is granted by the IB, and not by ECIS or CIE
